Dr. Becky Word
PT, DPT,
Doctor of Physical Therapy & Pelvic Health Specialist
I was introduced to the idea of pelvic floor physical therapy during PT school, where it was briefly mentioned in a lecture here and there. My initial thoughts were: “That is so cool that some PTs do that! I never will, but it’s cool that some do!” As the years progressed, I had many friends and family members mention things like urinary leakage, pain with sex, or prolapse. I would always excitedly point them in the direction of a pelvic floor PT, feeling proud of myself that I at least knew where to send them.
It wasn’t until my own pregnancy with my first child that I truly learned how important it is to have great care for the pelvic floor. Through my experience, I found myself constantly reading about how to address common pelvic floor dysfunctions, and talking about it with anyone who would listen. I eventually realized that I wanted to go “all in” and began furthering my education to be able to treat pelvic floor dysfunctions in 2017.
While I was drawn in specifically to help pregnant and postpartum individuals initially, I have come to realize that what I love most is helping people address the sensitive subjects that come along with pelvic floor dysfunction. I enjoy working with people of all ages and genders, and feel so honored to be a part of each person’s journey towards a healthy pelvic floor.
I received my Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science at Georgia State University, and continued my education there for my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I grew up in the metro Atlanta area and am proud to have served the area through my career. I have worked in a number of settings, including inpatient rehab, general outpatient care, and specialized pelvic floor practices. I have truly found my place here in the pelvic floor rehab world, I plan to continue helping patients for years to come!
“I had my first pelvic floor therapy appointment with Dr. Becky and was extremely impressed by her thoroughness in reviewing and assessing my case. She was extremely professional and compassionate. In addition, she was able to provide knowledgeable answers and suggestions to my questions. During my session, Dr. Becky suggested a different approach to one of my pelvic exercises-which worked! I left my appointment with renewed hope and confidence. Without a doubt, I would highly recommend Dr. Becky!”
