Dr. Liz Huls

PT, DPT, NCS
Doctor of Physical Therapy & Pelvic Health Specialist

I first learned about Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy during an elective course I took while in PT school. I thought it was amazing how a relatively small part of our anatomy could have connections to most parts of our body and have such an impact on a person’s quality of life and wellbeing. It wasn’t until I took a Pelvic Health course that I had a better appreciation how this specialty can have profound effects on someone’s life: whether that’s painful intercourse from an overactive pelvic floor, urinary incontinence postpartum, or constipation stemming from an overactive sympathetic nervous system. After taking this course I was eager to continue my path into pelvic health physical therapy.

One of my most memorable patients came to physical therapy as a last-ditch effort to treat her stress urinary incontinence. She had tried everything to help herself for the last 4 years, but all of these self-interventions seemed to be making her incontinence worse. We worked together and looked at her whole system, from her diet and fluid intake to her nervous system and chronic stress. We were able to make small changes to her lifestyle, bring awareness to her pelvic floor, and improve her muscle weakness and coordination issues. Within a short period of time she was able to return to jogging and jumping rope with her daughter without leaking.

Seeing the changes in a person’s life that can come from teaching them how their pelvic floor works in connection with the rest of their body and helping them regain it through lifestyle, specific exercises, and hands-on therapy is what makes this work so rewarding.

I completed my Doctorate in Physical Therapy degree at Ohio University and have been practicing as a physical therapist since 2013. Out of PT school, I was originally drawn to the neurological patient population where I have received my board-certified specialty in neurology through the American Physical Therapy Association. I have completed extensive coursework in pelvic health through the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute. I love taking a holistic approach to my treatments and treating the entire person, not just the ailment. I am passionate about treating all people with pelvic floor dysfunction and working with them on the connection between the different systems of the body, particularly using my skills in working with the nervous system, to restore a full life.

“ I had been struggling with functional constipation and painful penetration for a long time. I was initially hesitant to reach out for help due to fear of embarrassment and the stigma associated with these types of problems. But man, I am SOOO glad I met Dr. Liz Huls. She is an amazing and talented specialist, and she helped to create such an open, warm, and safe space for me to work on my issues. I am happy and proud to say that my constipation issues have made tremendous progress and my painful penetration is virtually gone!!! Thank you Dr. Huls and the SPH team!!”
