Children have pelvic floor muscles too! Problems like constipation, bladder accidents and abdominal pain can cause significant challenges for children and their families.

At SPH, we have the largest pediatric pelvic health program in Georgia. We strive to provide our families with the tools and support they need to overcome these difficult challenges.

Your Child Is Not Alone

Bowel and bladder problems are a growing challenge for many children worldwide. In fact, some research shows that up to 30% of children deal with constipation across the world and nearly 20% of school-aged children experience daytime bladder leaks. Since the pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in support for the bladder and bowels, and control of emptying, improving pelvic floor function can often make a big difference in bowel and bladder symptoms.

Some of the common problems we work with are:

Constipation

Dyssynergic defecation

Daytime bladder accidents

Voiding dysfunction

Bedwetting/Enuresis

Bowel accidents or Encopresis

Potty training difficulties (ages 3.5+)

Functional abdominal pain

Pelvic pain

Surgical recovery

And much more!

Our Expert Physical Therapists Are Here to Help

At SPH, our goal is to partner with the children, adolescents and parents we work with to determine the optimal examination and treatment approach for the individual. We strive to make our sessions fun and engaging, and use creative games and exercises to help children better connect with their bodies.

Treatment Typically Includes

  • Surface EMG biofeedback training with computerized animation to improve connection and awareness of the pelvic floor muscles (note: this is completely external, using sticker electrodes).

  • Education for families regarding healthy habits for the bowels and bladder, strategies for toileting, trouble shooting for school-related challenges, coordinating with other medical providers and much more!

  • Specific exercises to improve abdominal wall, hip, and spinal mobility and optimize pelvic health.

  • Games, toys, books, and other learning resources to improve understanding and function.

  • And much more!
